Forty years ago, 916 W. Franklin St. served as the first Student Center for VCU. Today, it's known as the Millhiser House and houses offices for several VCU programs including the office of International Education.

The home was built between 1891–94 and was designed by William M. Poindexter for Samson Hirsh. The home was transferred to Hirsh's brother-in-law Gustavus Millhiser in 1894. Stories circulated that Millhiser had wanted the house for his girlfriend, an Italian opera singer. It was thought that the unique open balconies might remind her of her past theatre performances. A secret tunnel beneath the house became part of the house legend.

The Millhiser House served as the operations center for WJRB for many years and later WVCW. The house was acquired by RPI (VCU) in 1964.
