Mid 70's
T
he 70's continued to see changes at WJRB including a name change. Desiring to align more closely with the new university, the station staff decided to select WVCU as the new station call letters. But the school administration decided to keep their options open for a future station not controlled by students and thus vetoed the desired call letters. The station decided with that line of thinking the station could select something different like WCVW. Of course, this was a little bit of an inside stab at the administration because everyone at the station knew the way the new call letters would be read on the air, "W-C-V-double U". Thus student radio continued to march forward on the VCU campus into the crazy disco era.

Also, we may have been one of the few radio stations ever to get requests from listeners to play an original commercial that we had written and produced. We were that good.

An incentive was created to help provide additional funds to the station's fledgling budget by offering our sales people a standard commission on all ad sales. After a great deal of leg work, letter writing and phone calls, WJRB became the first college radio station in Virginia to receive permission from the state ABC board to air commercials promoting the "3.2 beer" that was available to those 18 years old and older.

UGLY continued to grow by playing a wide selection of albums that never saw the light of day on other stations. The UGLY program went on to influence other radio stations such as WGOE-AM in Richmond, VA.

Bill Byrd was always ready to engage in an interesting conversation. He was also known for his hip collection of 1960's "mod" pants which actually inspired the hit 60's TV show "The Mod Squad".
