Dear Webmaster,
What a pleasant surprise to come across this site. I
remember a few things from those early VCU days. John
Brown and Bill Byrd! A smile comes to my face. Bill
Kovaric, my old roommate, used to do the Ugly Show
naked...(so he said.)
John Brown! What a guy!
It's been so long I'm afraid to ask where VJ is.
I'm in Anchorage, Alaska on the "Cosco run" just now.
Live off the grid 330 miles due east in the middle of
the biggest piece of protected wilderness on the planet.
I'll look for some photos for you when I get home and
see what else I can hustle up.
Best to you,
Jim Drewry

Excellent site!
Thanks for the memories. I distinctly remember the night
in
'68 that my roomate and I, in the dorm at 808, called
the station about ten
times to make Steve Antonacci play Donovan's 'Atlantis'
for the umpteenth
time. (And, he finally did!) I also have vivid memories
of hearing 'Hey
Jude' in the basement cafeteria in the old Temple
Building where I was in
the theater department. Looking back, WJRB, and all of
the people behind it,
really contributed a lot to my college experience. Rock

What a trip. I now
have the UGLY clip on my desktop. A must listen first
thing in the morning.
I think you and I met once. No way to be sure I guess. I
recorded a song of mine, "What's Your Name" at WLEE
radio using a sound technique of recording my voice and
a guitar track on 1 cart then dubbing it to another and
adding additional tracks. By the 8th or 9th generation I
had a full recording but the guitar sounded like a sitar
because of the wow and flutter factor. Got the bug and
began doing the same thing late at night at WJRB. I also
took part of the hit song,"No Matter What Shape" or
something like that (it was also used nationally for an
Alkaseltzer TV spot} and sang the call letters of WJRB
over it. Not sure it ever made it to air. I remember
that my song actually made it to air because I called it
in. I also heard it a couple of times in Hibbs cafeteria
where I was a student manager. Meant I could control the
volume of the radio.
Anyway, that's where I met a brilliant young talent and
star of the Mix Michaels radio show. I think his show
was on late and our paths crossed. And indeed they
continue to this day. And he's been trying for years to
get me down under. Probably wouldn't return.
Thanks for sending the link to me. Many fond memories.
It was in that building that I had my first nude drawing
art class. Take care and have a great year.
